Local Move

Local Move usually refers to a move that is no longer than 100 miles away to your new address. As opposed to a long-distance move which is calculated by volume and distance, the local move is determined by the number of movers multiplied by the number of hours it would take to complete the move from start to finish. Usually, there is a minimum charge required by the moving company of three (3) hours and the normal rate for the movers is $75.00 per hour.

Here is an example: Moving from Miami, FL to Boca Raton, FL of the contents of a 3- bedroom apartment would normally take 3 movers to complete in about 5 hours. So, the total cost amount to $375.00.

Tips:

Always check your watch for the time when the movers arrive at your house and again when they complete the move.
Since the price is based on the total time of compilation, it is recommended that you try and make things easy and simple for the movers so they can work in the most efficient manner possible. For example, try to get your items ready to be moved and as close as possible to the door or entrance. If you need to make any arrangements for an elevator in your building, then make sure it is done before they arrive – remember that any holdup on your part will be “on the clock”!

Long Distance Move

Long distance move means that your shipment is moved between states and it is also known as an interstate move. As opposed to a local move that is priced according to an hourly rate, long distance move is priced according to the volume of the shipment according to the destination state to which you are moving. When saying ‘volume’ we referring to one of two types of measurements. The first type – which is the more popular one – is by reference to Cubic Feet while the less popular is based on weight, i.e., the lbs. of weight of your shipment.

Here is an example of calculating volume by cubic feet:Let’s say the rate from Florida to New York State is $4.00 per cubic feet and you have 1,000 cubic feet in total (that is about what a 4-5-bedroom apartment be), then the cost of your shipment amounts to $4,000.

Of course, you might incur some additional charges such as, for example, shuttling service into New York City – so make sure it’s included in the quote along with any other additional charges (like flights of stairs or long carry)!

Normally it is common to rate long carry on the distance over and above 75 feet from between the closest point that the truck can park and the entrance of the house/apartment from which items are moved. The fee for this service is normally required, if applicable, at both ends of the shipment (i.e., if distance is greater than 75 feet at both ends). The common rate for long carry is $75 for every additional 75 feet (or part thereof) beyond the first 75 feet.

Here is an example: You have between the truck and the house entry a distance of 200 feet. So, the long carry rate would be $150.00 since you have 125 feet above the first 75 feet.

As for flights of stairs, normally the first two flight of stairs are free and every additional flight of stairs is charged at $75. For example, if you are on the 4th floor the additional cost to your quote would be $150.
