Tips and Advice Before Shipping

Before you get started make sure you know what you want to take with you and what you are willing to leave behind. Today most shipping companies provide you a quote based on cubic feet or cubic meters, depending on the country you are shipping from. In the US for example, we use mostly cubic feet and a few movers use weight quotes. But either way, the less you take the less expensive your move will become.

Here are a few tips and advice from Moving Hunter you can use before you start looking for a shipping company:

  • Make sure you deal only with licensed and insured shipping companies.

  • Make sure you deal only with shipping companies that are also willing to provide you with a visual estimate – also known as a “home survey.” This will assure you that the quote is binding and accurate.

  • Make sure that the quote you are receiving includes door to door service, packing labor and materials, customs clearance at country of destination, any additional charges such as long carry or flights of stairs, special packing or handling charges (for example piano or safe service), and the disassembling and reassembling where needed.

  • Make sure the binding language of the contract includes total transit time from door to door.

For a foreign move, contact your local embassy at destination to make sure of all the laws and applicable regulations of shipping personal effects to the country of destination are clear to you in order to avoid any delays or penalties on your shipment when it arrives to the port of destination.

  • Make sure to find out in advance about the taxes and fees that apply to your shipment when arriving at port of destination. You can contact the customs office at country of destination and they will be able to assist you with such matters based on your status there and list of your shipped goods.

  • Apply a clear description on the outside of each box that is packed, a description indicating the room it is destined for at your new home or location. Make sure also to note if the contents are fragile.

  • Ask from the shipping companies that are providing moving services to also offer you contact information of previous clients that used their services to the same destination.
